CHAPLAINCY

Chaplaincy Team:

Mr. D. Sorrentino
Mr. A. Ganuelas

An active chaplaincy team of students and teachers who are committed to Jesus' vision of building God's Kingdom leads the community's spiritual development at St. Theresa of Lisieux. All of us are called to be channels through which the Risen Christ continues to be with, and for, the marginalized and disadvantaged in our time and place. Our chaplaincy team fosters and encourages the Biblical imperatives of social outreach, prayer, spiritual growth and community support through a variety of activities throughout the school year.

At the heart of a Catholic Christian school is the chaplaincy team: students and teachers together making a difference. Together they are working to make this school, and the world, a better place to live. Students and teachers are striving to live with and be witness to the values of compassion, commitment, building community, hope, respect for the other, and all the other values that make us Catholic Christians. Jesus, before he left us for the second time, said that we are now his hands, his voice, his feet, his heart, his body.

The staff also is part of the chaplaincy team. We have a team of over 10 teachers who are an integral part of the life of chaplaincy here at STL. The chaplaincy department could not begin to function without their help and support.

There are over 60 students involved in the Chaplaincy Council, which has representation from each grade. Students participate in a variety of liturgical and outreach activities.  New students are welcomed through the Partnership and Welcoming Program.

The chapel is a quiet, sacred space.  The doors are always open to students and staff for prayer and reflection.  Student counselling is also available.

ENCOURAGING YOUR TEEN TO ATTEND MASS

“In you there is hope for you belong to the future,
Just as the future belongs to youth.”

(Pope John Paul II, 1985)

The teenage years can be a challenging time.  It is a time when parental guidelines, family traditions and values are questioned.

While it may be a time of turmoil for both the teenager and the parent, it is a normal part of human development and of growing into adulthood.  During a time when going to Mass may be challenged, you might consider the following:

- Encourage your teenager to attend Mass and be confident that attendance at Mass will continue.

- If you feel challenged, recognize that questioning is frequently caused by a desire for greater understanding.  Affirm your teenager’s right to reflect critically and responsibly.

- Encourage your parish to welcome young people into its communal life.  Invite your son or daughter to be come involved.

- Show your commitment to the Eucharistic celebration and to your parish community by regular participation.  Your example or prayer, involvement and faith is a model for your teenager.

- Trust that God is with you and your teenager.  So be patient, and support your son/daughter in your prayer as he/she journeys through these challenging teen years.
