BTT1O1 - Information and Communication Technology in Business, Grade 9, Open
This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology.
BBI2O1 - Introduction to Business, Grade 10, Open
This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, and production, and of the importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.
BAF3M1 - Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting. Prerequisite: None
BDI3CI - Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11, College Preparation
This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a student-run school-based or summer business. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Prerequisite: None
BMI3C1 - Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11, College Preparation
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services, and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Prerequisite: None
BTA3O1 - Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, Grade 11, Open This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on
approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies. Prerequisite: None
BMX3E1 - Introduction to Retail and Service Marketing, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation
This course focuses on developing knowledge and applying skills in the context of retail and services marketing. Students learn about the importance of customer service, analyse the methods used to maintain customer loyalty, examine ways in which product presentation influences buyers, and investigate the critical factors in inventory control, including the role of technology. Prerequisite: None
IDC4U2 - Sports and Entertainment Marketing
The Sports and Entertainment Marketing interdisciplinary course emphasizes the development of practical skills and knowledge to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings related to the growing Sports and Entertainment Marketing industry. Through individual and collaborative inquiry students will use a range of print, electronic, and mass media resources to research into contemporary issues, real-life situations, and careers related to Sports and Entertainment Marketing. Students will acquire knowledge in the areas of ethics, consumer behaviour, consumer research, product development, pricing strategies, advertising, public relations/publicity, event marketing, endorsement, promotional licensing, sponsorship, product distribution, stadium design, legal issues and career opportunities in Sports
and Entertainment Marketing. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a responsible citizen who contributes to the common good. BAT4M1 - Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing. Prerequisite: Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
BBB4M1 - International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management. Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in business studies, English, or Canadian and world studies
BOH4M1 - Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyse the role of a leader in business with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will be emphasized throughout the course. Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in business studies, English, or Canadian and world studies
BDV4C1 - Entrepreneurship: Venture Planning in an Electronic Age, Grade 12, College Preparation This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills through the creation of a venture plan that capitalizes on the potential of e-commerce. Students will research and identify an opportunity for a venture. They will then complete the components of a venture plan that includes a website. Students who pursue an entrepreneurial option have greater control over their own job, career, and
calling. They also have the opportunity to integrate Catholic Social Teaching into their future ventures. Prerequisite: None
Department Description:
The fundamental purpose of the business studies program at STL is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to achieve success in secondary school, the workplace, postsecondary education or training, and daily life.
Students enrolled in Business Studies courses will: -gain an understanding of business concepts through the study of subjects such as accounting, entrepreneurship, information and communication technology, international business, marketing, and business leadership;
- achieve business, economic, financial, and digital literacy;
- develop the skills, including critical thinking skills, and strategies required to conduct research and inquiry and communicate findings accurately, ethically, and effectively;
-apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes acquired through the study of business to a variety of learning tasks and relate them to business phenomena on the local, national, and global levels;
- develop lifelong learning skills that will help them adapt to technological advancements, the changing workplace, and the global economy;
- make connections that will help them take advantage of potential postsecondary educational, work, and business opportunities.
