REQUIREMENTS:
FOR THE ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (OSSD)
Student Responsibilities, Achievement, and Attendance:
Regular attendance at school is critical for the student’s learning and achievement of course expectations. Students who do not attend school regularly, fail courses and thus jeopardize their attainment of an OSSD.
EARN 30 CREDITS:
A credit is granted to a student on the successful completion of a course that has been scheduled for a minimum of 110 hours, by a secondary school principal on behalf of the Minister of Education.
- 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)
- 3 credits in Mathematics (at least 1 credit in grades 11 or 12)
- 2 credits in Science
- 1 credit in French-as-a-Second Language
- 1 credit in Canadian History
- 1 credit in Canadian Geography
- 1 credit in the Arts
- 1 credit in Health & Physical Education
- 5 credit in Civics
- 5 credit in Career Studies Plus one credit from each of the following groups:
- English, or French as a second language, or a Native, Classical or International language, or Social Sciences and the Humanities, or Canadian and World Studies, or Guidance and Career Education, or Cooperative Education
- Health and Physical Education, or the Arts, or Business Studies, or Cooperative Education
- Grade 11 or 12 Science, or Grades 9-12 Technological Education, or Cooperative Education
In addition to the compulsory credits, students must complete:
- 12 optional credits
- 40 hours of community involvement activities
- the provincial literacy requirements
* A maximum of 2 credits in Cooperative Education can count as compulsory credits. ** A student may earn more than one Health and Physical Education credit with the same grade designation in any school year. Mandatory Credits:
- 4 credits in Religious Education
Elective Credits:
- 8 elective credits may be earned in all subject areas, including those on a compulsory list
- Any number of additional credits may be taken to complete the student’s program.
