CODE OF CONDUCT

RATIONALE:

A Christ-centred community is one in which: policies, practices and interpersonal relationships are animated by Gospel values that encourage and support the physical, emotional, intellectual, moral, spiritual, social and cultural development of each person, who shares the responsibility to help others achieve full potential.  The life of Jesus provides the model for interpersonal relationships.

In such a community, it is desirable that there be clearly articulated principles that govern disciplinary policies and practices. These school wide policies and practices, in turn, are expressed in a code of conduct that:

-   is communicated effectively to all members of the community;

-   is characterized by justice and consistency;

-   fosters both a respect for the rights and duties of others and an understanding of shared responsibilities.

Discipline is a necessary part of life. It is essential to the spiritual, social and educational development of the individual. By means of self discipline, an individual develops healthy and productive relationships with others.  Discipline works best when viewed as a positive learning process and when integrated with effective teaching practices.

It is a Catholic school’s responsibility to provide effective teaching and leadership within a positive school environment based on Christ as a model.  Within this environment, rights come with responsibilities. If self-discipline is not attained, then a wide range of alternatives may be used to facilitate the learning process.  Among these alternatives will be the opportunity for counseling within the school community and through support programs outside the school.

In consultation with school staff, administrators shall investigate before a consequence is given. Alternatives to suspension should be explored when a discretionary suspension offence has occurred.

A Code of Student Conduct enables a school to outline its expectations regarding behaviour to its students.  Expectations also apply to teachers and parents who should be familiar with the code and support its implementation.

Finally, the Code of Conduct reflects the values of the Catholic school community including respect for persons and property, and supports the safe school policy of the York District Catholic School Board.

Progressive disciplinary actions should be implemented at all times.
